IEC 60870‑5 is a communication standard for the remote monitoring and control of distributed systems. It is primarily used in SCADA systems to exchange measurement data and commands between control centres and field devices, and is employed across many industries, particularly in power supply, renewable energy, and water and infrastructure applications.
Pumping stations, reservoirs, lifting systems and waterworks use IEC 60870‑5 for status data, pump control, limit value signals and level monitoring.
‑Energy suppliers, network operators, solar and wind farms, energy storage facilities, pipeline networks, conveyor systems, tank farms and energy-intensive production sites use IEC 60870-5 for the secure transmission of measurement values, status information and control commands.

Configuration is carried out simply via a web browser – no additional engineering tools or programming skills are needed. This makes commissioning much simpler and faster.
With the extension of IEC 60870-5, PROCON-Connect and u-OS are becoming key components of solutions for grid expansion and decentralised infrastructures.
In future, PROCON-Connect will support both the serial IEC 60870-5-101 standard (IEC 101) and the TCP/IP-based IEC 60870-5-104 standard (IEC 104).
Full server and client implementations are available for both protocol variants. This enables PROCON-Connect to be used flexibly as a powerful gateway between previously separate IEC 60870-5 networks and in cascaded topologies. Data from several server instances can thus be aggregated efficiently via client mechanisms and then forwarded to higher-level SCADA systems via the integrated server.
The integration of IEC 60870-5 into Weidmüller’s open operating system u-OS provides a flexible control solution for the monitoring and control of distributed systems and installations. When combined with the u-remote I/O system and the maximum flexibility offered by u-OS, this opens up a wide range of potential applications.
